About the Costa Blanca
Costa Blanca refers to 200 kilometres of Mediterranean coastline in the Alicante province of Spain. It extends from the town of Denia in the north to Pilar de la Horadada in the south, the southermost city in the Valencian community. Benidorm and Alicante cities are the major tourist centres.
Because the Costa Blanca is such a large area, covering the complete coastline of the Alicant province, it is necessary to point out the great difference between the northern Costa Blanca and the southern Costa Blanca. Basically Costa Blanca north is everything north of Alicante (from north to south: Denia – Xabia – Moraira – Calpe – Altea – Benidorm) and Costa blanca south is everything south of Alicante (from north to south: Alicante – Elche – Santa Pola – Torrevieja – Pilar de la Horadada). The Costa Blanca South has a very hot climate, and the terrain on the coast is very flat. The coastal towns centre around the beaches and there are many high rise apartment blocks. Elche is a nice city in this area, and let’s not forget the Isle of Tabarca just off the coast of Alicante.
In Costa Blanca North the terrain is different and there are more mountains and the land is not as dry and barren. Instead of large sandy beaches you can find cliffs and coves in Costa Blanca north. In the northern Costa Blanca towns spread further inland and in some places you can find villas built upon the hills overlooking the Mediterranean. Alicante is the biggest city on the Costa Blanca and it is very spanish so most expats move further south or north instead of moving to the city center of Alicante.
